Cortana and Start menu not working

Cortana and Start menu not working. Cortana and start menu may not work due to the multiple reasons. The broken start menu can be fixed through multiple troubleshooting steps. When you try to click on the Start (Windows) icon or any icon on the taskbar, they will not launch.


Cortana and start menu not working when you try to launch them including the icons available on the taskbar.

Troubleshooting Steps:

In order to fix the issue with the Cortana and Start menu not working, follow the below troubleshooting steps:

  1. Press Windows logo + X keys on the keyboard to get the shortcut option for the Command prompt.

2. Select the option Command Prompt (Admin) and press enter. Please select YES or OK if prompted.

3. When the command prompt is launched, type powershell and press enter.

4. In a few seconds, the above screen will appear.

5. If you get the above screen, copy the below script and paste it on the Command Prompt. When all the script is pasted, press enter.

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers |Where-Object {$_.InstallLocation -like “*SystemApps*”} | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}

6. It will take few minutes to run that script, once it is done, check if the Start menu and Cortana working fine, if not reboot the computer and check if the issue is fixed.

7. If the issue still remains, it is required to proceed with the Operating System Repair.
