Browser homepage not changing

Browser homepage not changing. When you try to change the homepage from one page to another, it will not change but will get stuck with the same one which you do not want to use anymore.

 

When you try to change the homepage of your web browser, it will not change. It might be because of the following reasons:

  1. Issue may occur when deceptive software, such as spyware installed on the computer.
  2. Cause of malware in the computer.
  3. Some software contains the web components include with the installation.

Follow the below troubleshooting steps in order to fix the issue in your computer.

Note: Please check if the issue is fixed after each and every method and then proceed with another method.

Method 1: Perform a virus scan and remove unwanted application.

  1. Run virus scan (Hitman Pro, Super Anti Spyware, Malwarebytes) in the computer to remove any malware present in the computer.
  2. Use Revo Uninstaller to remove unwanted applications and tool bar.
  3. Open Internet Explorer browser. Click tools > Manage Add-ons > Search Providers.
  4. Remove unwanted search engine.
  5. Check the Prevent programs from suggesting changes to my default search provide

 

6. Restart the browser.

7. Click Tools > Internet Options > General > Type your homepage address (example: http://www.google.com/) in the homepage > click Apply.

 

8. Click the HOME button  in the browser it will show your homepage address mention in settings.

 

Check if the issue is fixed after the above steps, if not proceed with the further troubleshooting steps.

Method 2: Remove malware address from shortcut icon.

  1. Right Click on the browser icon in taskbar and again right click on Internet Explorer.
  2. Click Properties.

3. In Properties > Shortcut tab > Target > remove the link after the iexplore.exe > Click Apply.

4. Now open the browser and see if the homepage is changed.

Note: The above step will be applicable for all the browsers.

Method 3: Change homepage through Registry

  1. Press Windows logo + R on the keyboard > type regedit and press enter.
  2. Before proceeding, take backup of the registry.
  3. Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Microsoft > Internet Explorer > Main.

4. Check for the Start Page name on the right hand screen, double click on it, remove the link present in the value Data column and enter the URL that you wish to set as a homepage.

5. Do above steps in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Wow6432 > Microsoft > Internet Explorer > Main.

6. Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Microsoft > Internet Explorer > Search Scope.

7. Delete other entry except your default search provider.

8. Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Clients > StartMenuInternet > IExplore.exe > Shell > Open > Command.

9. Double click the Default > Remove any link after the iexplore.exe > click OK.

10. Exit the Registry Editor.

11. Restart the computer.

12. Check the homepage has been changed.

Note: The above step will be applicable for all the browsers.
